Print on demand cost per copy is a fixed charge plus a rate per page. Offset cost per copy is a smaller fixed charge plus a smaller rate per page, but you pay a one-time setup fee and you must order the whole run up front.

The break-even quantity is the setup fee divided by the saving per copy. Above that number, offset is cheaper. Below it, print on demand is cheaper and you carry no stock.
