How to Use the Cover Template
- Enter your trim width, height and page count.
- Choose white or cream paper.
- Check the preview and the dimensions.
- Download the SVG and send it to your cover designer.
How the Cover Template Works
Spine width is the page count times the paper thickness per page. The full-wrap size is the back cover, spine and front cover together, plus a bleed of 0.125 inches on every outer edge. The safe zone sits 0.25 inches inside the trim, so text there will not be cut.
The barcode box is drawn at 2 by 1.2 inches in the lower right of the back cover, a common size for an ISBN barcode. Your printer may place it differently.
Things to Know Before You Rely on the Result
- This is a guide, not a print-ready file. Printers publish their own templates, and theirs are the final word.
- Spines under about 100 pages are too thin for text.
- Keep important text inside the safe zone and let background art run into the bleed.
Cover Template FAQs
What is a cover template?
It is a layout guide that shows where the front, spine, back, bleed and safe zone sit, so a designer builds the cover to the right size.
Can I send this SVG to my printer?
Use it to brief your designer. Send the printer the cover file built on the printer's own template.
What is the safe zone?
It is the area inside the trim where text and key images are safe from being cut during printing and trimming.
