Comic Book Writers for Hire: Scripts for Comics and Graphic Novels

Comic book writers turn a story idea into a script an artist can draw: page by page, panel by panel, with dialogue, captions and clear direction. If you have a world, a character or a plot but no script, you can hire one of our writers to build it with you and deliver pages ready for your artist.

Some clients are artists who want a writer. Others are authors, founders or fans with a big idea and no drawing skills. Get a free consultation and tell us your story. Comics are part of our wider ghostwriting services, with the same confidentiality and ownership terms.

01

What a Comic Book Writer Does

A comic writer builds the story and its pacing, then writes the script. The script says what happens on each page, what each panel shows and what the characters say. The artist then draws it and a letterer places the text. It is a team sport, and the writer's job is to give the artist something exciting to draw and enough room to be creative. We never tell a skilled artist how to draw a face, only what the moment needs.

There are two common script styles. A full script describes every panel and line of dialogue in detail. A plot-first approach gives the artist a looser outline, and the dialogue is written after the art arrives. We can work either way, and we recommend the one that fits your artist and your schedule.

Comics reward brevity. A page may hold a handful of panels and a few short lines, so every word has to earn its place. We write dialogue that fits inside a speech balloon and describe images that can actually be drawn.

02

Who Hires a Comic Book Writer

Artists with a series idea and no time to write it. Authors who want their novel or world told in pictures. Small publishers and creators building a line of titles, and brands that want a comic for marketing or education. Anyone with a story that deserves a visual form, including people who want a true story told as a graphic memoir, a topic our real-life story writing services also cover. You do not need to know comic formatting or have written a script before. Bring the idea, the characters you love and the ending you hope for, and we will do the structure.

03

Comic Writing Projects We Take On

Scope varies a lot, so we agree on the format, page count and pace up front.

Single-issue scripts

A complete issue with a beginning, middle and end, usually in a standard page count agreed with your artist. We plan the page turns, so reveals land at the right moment. We also keep the page count and panel budget realistic, because an overloaded page is slow and costly for an artist to draw.

Graphic novels and series arcs

Longer stories planned across chapters or issues, with character growth, recurring themes and an ending the reader feels was earned. Pacing is the hard part: a long arc needs quiet pages as well as loud ones, and we plan where each issue ends so readers want the next. Many series begin with a short first arc, so you can test the story before committing to more.

Series bibles and pitch packages

The documents that sell or organize a comic: a logline, character profiles, the world, a season plan and sample pages. They help you pitch to publishers, and they keep an artist and a writer on the same page.

Prose-to-comic adaptations

We adapt your novel, story or screenplay into comic form. For film or television versions, our screenplay writing services may fit better.

Webcomics and short strips

Short, regular stories for online release, with a consistent voice and a clear ending each time. A weekly strip needs a different rhythm from a long graphic novel, and we plan for that. We also write the descriptions and jokes so they read well on a phone screen.

How Our Comic Scripting Process Works

  1. Consultation. We discuss the story, genre, audience, format and your artist, and sign an NDA before seeing your material.
  2. Story outline. We build characters, structure and a page-level breakdown. You approve it before scripting.
  3. Script. We write panel descriptions, dialogue and captions for each page, with sound effects and lettering notes where they matter.
  4. Your notes. You and your artist react to the script, and the artist's practical comments, such as a panel that is hard to draw, are welcome. We revise through the agreed rounds.
  5. Final script. You receive a clean script, formatted for artist and letterer, with notes on tone and reference.
05

Working With Your Artist

If you already have an artist, we write to their strengths and talk through the script with them. A good script leaves the visuals to the drawing and stays out of the way. We keep panel descriptions short and ask what the artist needs, such as reference notes on costumes, places and moods, and we pass on any questions you collect. If you do not have an artist, our illustration services include comic and graphic novel art, and the scope would be quoted separately. Printing and distribution come later, once the pages are done.

Art creates its own rights. Written agreements between writer, artist and publisher should say who owns what, who is credited and how any income is shared. You can register both script and art with the U.S. Copyright Office, which explains visual arts registration.

06

Turnaround and What Affects the Cost

Pricing is quoted per project after a free consultation, as a fixed written quote with milestones and no hidden fees. Page count, whether you need a single issue or a series, complexity, research, the number of revision rounds and how quickly you give feedback drive the figure. See our pricing page for how quotes work.

The timeline is confirmed in the written quote and depends on length, research and feedback speed. Rush schedules are available for an additional fee, quoted up front.

07

Ownership and Confidentiality

We sign an NDA before ghostwriting work begins. You own everything we write for you. Rights transfer on delivery, confirmed in writing at the start of the project, and we keep no copyright, royalty interest or credit claim. Scripts can be registered as literary works. Creators also find the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund useful for understanding the legal issues around comics.

We cannot promise that a comic will be published, sold, optioned or adapted. Before signing any deal with a publisher, studio or artist, consult an entertainment lawyer.

Comic Book Writers FAQs

What does a comic book writer do?

A comic book writer plans the story and writes the script: what happens on each page, what each panel shows and what the characters say. The artist draws it, and a letterer adds the text.

How many words or pages is a comic script?

A standard single issue is often around twenty to twenty-four pages, with a handful of panels per page. Page count and style vary, so we confirm it with you and your artist.

Can you find an artist for me?

We can scope art through our illustration services, quoted separately. You are also welcome to bring your own artist, and we will write to their style.

Who owns the comic?

You own what we write, with rights transferring on delivery. If an artist contributes, put the arrangement in writing and consult an entertainment lawyer, especially if there is any chance the story will become a film or game.

Can you adapt my novel into a graphic novel?

Yes. We condense the story, choose the key scenes and write the pages. You keep your rights in the original book.
