01

Why Your Book Cover Matters

Readers decide fast. On a bookstore table or a phone screen, a cover gets a glance, and that glance decides whether anyone reads your description at all.

Online, your cover often appears as a thumbnail about the size of a postage stamp. Title text has to stay readable at that size, and the image has to say "this is a thriller" or "this is a warm romance" before a word of your blurb is seen. A cover that looks homemade tells readers the inside may be the same.

Genre signals do the rest of the work. Browsers scan for color, mood and type style long before they read a title, and they sort books into "my kind of story" or "not for me" almost instantly. Your cover should make that sorting easy in your favor.

A strong cover also supports everything around it. Ads, social posts and reviews all show your cover first, which is why it matters so much to your book marketing services plan. Good design will not replace a good book, but it gives a good book a fair chance. We never promise sales, only a cover that represents your work honestly and professionally.

02

What Our Book Cover Design Services Include

Pick the formats you need, or ask for the full set so every edition matches. Covers come in four styles: 2D, 3D, pictorial and text-based.

Front cover design

The front cover is where the sale happens. We build a concept around your genre, your title and your target reader, then refine the typography, imagery and color palette until the visual hierarchy is clear. You see real options, not a template with your name dropped in. We also look at how the title and author name will sit in a crowded search results page, because that is where many sales begin.

Full wrap cover for print (spine and back cover)

A print cover wraps around the whole book. We design the front, spine and back as one piece, including your back cover blurb, author photo, tagline and barcode space, sized to your exact trim size and page count so nothing lands in the wrong place. Text stays clear of the trim edge and the spine fold, and the back cover leaves room for your blurb to breathe.

Ebook cover and Amazon thumbnail

Ebook covers are judged small. We test each design at thumbnail size, check that the title holds up on a phone, and deliver files sized for the major retailers so your listing looks sharp wherever it appears. Fine detail that disappears at small size gets simplified, not shrunk.

Audiobook cover (square format)

Audiobook stores use a square image, so a standard cover cannot simply be cropped. We rework the layout for the square format and keep the title legible. Many listeners browse on a phone, so contrast matters even more. Planning a recording? See our audiobook production services.

Series branding and matching covers

Readers should spot book two from across the room. We set a repeatable look for your series, with consistent title treatment, layout and color logic, while giving each volume its own identity. If you are planning several books, tell us early, because it is far easier to build a system first than to match covers later.

03

Cover Design for Every Genre

Tell us your genre and your comparison titles, and we study what those readers already buy. Every genre has visual habits, and readers use them as shortcuts. Break them by accident and you attract the wrong audience. Follow them with some originality and the right readers feel at home.

  • Romance book covers: Warm or bright palettes, expressive script or bold type, and imagery that signals the subgenre, from sweet contemporary to steamy historical.
  • Thriller book covers: Dark, high-contrast imagery, big sturdy titles and a sense of tension or threat, often with the author name treated as a brand.
  • Fantasy book covers: Rich illustration or detailed photo manipulation, atmosphere, and type that suggests a world with its own rules.
  • Memoir book covers: Honest, personal and quiet. A strong photograph or simple graphic, with a title that carries emotion without shouting.
  • Business book covers: Clean, confident and instantly readable. Bold typography, plenty of space and a subtitle that states the promise.
  • Children's book covers: Bright color, friendly characters and playful lettering that appeals to the child while reassuring the parent holding the wallet. Age range matters here, since a board book and a chapter book look very different.

If your picture book needs original artwork, ask about our book illustration services. If you are still working on the story itself, our children's book writing services can help.

Our Book Cover Design Process

  1. Cover brief. We start with a design brief session, where you tell us about your book, your readers, your title and any covers you admire. If you have an idea or an image you love, bring it.
  2. Concepts. Your designer develops two to three distinct cover concepts with typography and color already in place, so you are judging real design and not rough sketches. Each concept takes a different approach, which helps you discover what you actually want.
  3. Revisions. You choose a direction and give feedback on layout, imagery, type and mood. We refine the design in rounds at each key stage, with revision rounds included in the agreed price, and your designer explains the reasoning behind each change so you can decide with confidence.
  4. Final files. Once you approve, we produce the finished artwork and a 3D book mockup you can use for promotion.
  5. Print-ready delivery. Files are prepared to the specs of your printer and retailer, and your project manager checks them before they reach you. That check catches the small problems, like a title sitting too close to the spine, that otherwise surface only after printing.

A single project manager stays your point of contact from brief to delivery, and we reply within one business day. Your cover can also be bundled with ghostwriting or author branding.

05

Print-Ready Specs and File Delivery

A beautiful cover still fails if the file is wrong. We build to the right trim size, add proper bleed, calculate spine width from your final page count and paper choice, and set images at 300 DPI in CMYK for print. Author-supplied images work too, as long as they are 300 DPI. Bleed extends artwork past the trim edge so no white slivers appear after cutting, and getting those numbers right is what separates a clean print run from a costly reprint.

We work to the cover requirements of the major platforms, including KDP cover requirements and the IngramSpark cover template generator. For barcode placement, see ISBN and barcode information. Your ISBN is registered in your name, and we leave a clear space on the back cover for the barcode.

You receive a press-ready PDF with bleed for the full wrap, a high-resolution JPEG ebook cover at least 2,560 pixels on the longest side, and the square audiobook version if you ordered it. Files meet the requirements of KDP, IngramSpark, Apple Books and Kobo, and full rights to the final cover transfer to you on delivery. Because spine width depends on page count, we match your cover to the interior produced by our book formatting services.

06

Book Cover Design Pricing and Turnaround

We do not publish a flat cover price, because covers vary a great deal. Every project is quoted after a free consultation, and the fixed quote is put in writing before work starts, split into milestones, with no hidden fees.

The main factors are these, and each one is easy to discuss on a first call:

  • Which formats you need: ebook only, full print wrap, audiobook, or all three.
  • Whether you want stock imagery, photo manipulation or fully custom illustration.
  • Whether the cover is a single book or part of a series.
  • Extras such as a hardcover dust jacket or promotional mockups.

For context, experienced designers who work with major publishers charge about $600 to $900 for a cover, while budget stock services run about $30 to $150. Those are market figures, not our quote. Timing depends on the same things as price, plus how quickly feedback reaches us: first concepts arrive 7 to 10 business days after the brief is approved, each revision round takes 3 to 5 business days, and a standard project runs 2 to 3 weeks. Rush timelines are available for an additional fee, quoted up front. You can read more on our cover design pricing page, or ask for a quote tailored to your book. Because we use the same milestone structure on every project, you always know what has been done and what comes next.

07

Portfolio and Client Results

We have helped publish 250+ books for 170+ authors, and 50+ of those books became bestsellers. We cannot promise a result for any individual title, but we can show you the work and let you judge the quality for yourself.

Browse our portfolio to see covers across genres, from thrillers and romances to memoirs and business titles. Look at how each one reads at thumbnail size, because that is how most readers will meet yours. Notice, too, how the covers in a single genre feel related without looking identical.

08

Why Authors Choose Our Designers

Our designers know genre conventions and work from your brief, not a recycled template. Your cover is original work made for your book alone.

You also keep what you pay for. Genre experience, honest feedback and clear communication are what we aim to deliver. Under our 100% author ownership policy, the rights to your book stay with you, and we never take royalties. The result is a cover you can use, update and reprint on your terms. You will also work with a team that already handles writing, editing and publishing, so your cover fits the rest of your book plan from day one.

Book Cover Design Services FAQs

How much does a professional book cover cost?

Cover design prices are not published because they depend on formats, imagery and complexity. An ebook-only cover with stock imagery sits at one end, while a full wrap with custom illustration sits at the other. Series and extras add to the scope. After a free consultation, you get a fixed written quote with no hidden fees.

How long does it take to design a book cover?

Timing depends on your formats and how quickly you give feedback. First concepts usually arrive 7 to 10 business days after the brief is approved, each revision round takes 3 to 5 business days, and a standard project runs about 2 to 3 weeks in total. Quick feedback is the best way to speed things up. A simple ebook cover moves faster than a full wrap with custom artwork. Rush timelines are available for an additional fee, quoted up front. Your project manager gives you a schedule with your quote, so you know when to expect each stage.

Can I use my own image or idea for my cover?

Yes. Share your ideas, sketches, reference covers or photographs, and your designer will build from them. If an image is low resolution or unlicensed, we will tell you honestly and suggest an alternative that works for print.

What file formats will I receive?

You receive a press-ready PDF with bleed for the full wrap (300 DPI, CMYK, with spine width set from your confirmed page count), a high-resolution JPEG ebook cover at least 2,560 pixels on the longest side and a square audiobook cover if included in your order. We also supply a 3D mockup for promotion. Files are prepared to the specs of the platforms you plan to use, and we can supply extra sizes for social media if you ask.

Do I own the copyright to my cover?

Our policy is 100% author ownership of your work, and that includes your copyright, credit and royalties. Full rights to the final cover transfer to you on delivery. Where a cover uses licensed stock, we explain the license terms upfront, in plain language, so there are no surprises when you publish or reprint.

How many revisions are included?

Revision rounds are built in at each key stage, from concept to final files. Your quote states exactly what is covered, so there is no guessing. If your direction changes substantially after approval, your project manager will discuss options with you before any extra work begins.
