A hardcover feels different in the hand. It signals care, lasts on a shelf and makes a better gift, which is why memoirs, children's books, cookbooks and legacy projects so often go that way. It also has more rules than a paperback, and most delays come from getting them wrong. This page walks you through those rules in plain terms so you can plan with confidence.
What Hardcover Printing Involves
A hardcover is built in two parts. The inside pages, called the text block, are printed, gathered and bound. The cover is a separate case made of stiff board wrapped in printed paper, cloth or another material, and the text block is attached to it. That is why hardcovers are often called case bound.
Two finishing styles are common. A hardcover with a dust jacket has a loose printed jacket over a plain or stamped case, and the jacket can carry the cover art, a blurb and an author bio on its flaps. A case wrap, sometimes called a printed case, puts the artwork directly on the board with no jacket, which is simpler and often preferred for children's books and workbooks.
Because the cover and the interior are made separately, both need accurate files built to the same page count. Change the page count late and the spine width changes too, which means redoing the cover.
Hardcover Binding Options and Page Ranges
Every binding has a range of page counts it can handle well. The table shows the options we plan around, so you can see how a hardcover compares.
| Binding | Page range | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Hardcover with dust jacket | Case bound, 100 to 1,000 pages | Memoirs, business books, novels |
| Hardcover case wrap (no jacket) | Case bound, 100 to 1,000 pages | Gift editions, workbooks, photo books |
| Hardcover for children's books | Case bound, 32 to 500 pages | Picture books, early readers |
| Sewn binding | 50 to 500 pages | Premium editions that must lie flat |
| Perfect bound paperback | 32 to 800 pages | Standard trade paperback |
| Saddle stitch | Up to 64 pages | Booklets and short guides |
| Spiral or wire-o | 20 to 300 pages | Workbooks and planners |
| Board book | 10 to 50 pages | Toddler books |
For reference, the Amazon KDP print options page lists what that platform offers, and requirements differ between printers, so we confirm yours before you commit.
Choosing Between Jacket, Case Wrap and Other Bindings
Start with the reader. A dust jacket suits adult nonfiction and fiction, where the jacket copy helps sell the book and a bookshop display looks traditional. A case wrap suits books that get handled roughly, since there is no loose jacket to tear or lose. Some authors choose a case wrap for the library or classroom copy and a jacketed edition for retail.
Next, check the page count. This is the step authors skip most often. A very short book can look thin in hardcover, and a very long one may need a different structure. If your manuscript is under 100 pages, a case-bound adult hardcover may not suit it, and we will say so and suggest alternatives such as a children's hardcover range, sewn binding or a paperback first.
Finally, think about how it will be sold. A hardcover can sit beside a paperback and ebook in a combined launch. Our Signature Edition publishing package includes print, ebook, hardcover and audiobook, starting from $7,900, which is a publishing price and not a print price. The final fixed quote depends on scope, and nothing is guaranteed about sales.
Weigh the feel of the finished object too. A hardcover is heavier, so a long book may suit a smaller trim size, and a book with photographs may need coated paper. We talk through those trade-offs in the consultation and put the agreed choices in your written quote.
Getting Your Files Ready
Printers reject files that miss their specifications, so we build to them from the start. The interior is typeset to your trim size with correct margins, and then checked against the confirmed page count. See our book formatting services for that stage.
The cover is built as one flat file, covering the back, spine and front. It needs bleed, a spine width calculated from your confirmed page count, 300 DPI images and CMYK color. A hardcover cover also needs extra wrap-around allowance at the edges, which the printer's template shows. Our book cover design services produce press-ready PDFs that meet those rules, and they can be done alongside the interior so both files agree.
If you plan a jacket, it needs its own flap dimensions, so tell us at the outset. We also register your ISBN in your name and prepare the barcode and metadata before files are submitted.
One habit saves a great deal of trouble: finish all editing before layout. Late text changes shift pages, and a shift of even a few pages can move the spine. Run a final proofread on the typeset pages and then lock the file.
How the Project Runs
- Free consultation. We discuss your book, audience, page count and goals.
- Binding recommendation. We confirm which binding and finish fit your pages and budget.
- Fixed written quote. You approve an itemized quote with milestones before work begins.
- Interior and cover files. We finalize the layout, lock the page count and build the cover to match.
- Proof and corrections. You review a proof, and revision rounds at each key stage are included in the agreed scope.
- Printing and distribution. Once approved, the book goes to print, and distribution through channels such as IngramSpark can reach bookshops and libraries.
Timeline and Cost
Be wary of any quote that arrives before your page count and trim size are known, because those two numbers drive nearly everything else. We do not publish printing prices, because the cost depends on the project. The main drivers are page count, trim size, paper, jacket or case wrap, print quantity, color or black and white interior, finishing options and delivery location. You receive a fixed written quote before work starts.
A typical publishing project runs 4 to 8 weeks from manuscript handover to live distribution. Your actual schedule is confirmed in the quote and assumes prompt feedback on proofs. Printing time varies with quantity and method, so we confirm it in writing instead of guessing. Rush schedules are available for an additional fee, quoted up front. See our pricing page for how publishing packages are priced.
Ownership
Your book is yours, and so is every file we make for it. You own your book, your files and your cover, with rights confirmed in writing at the start. We keep no copyright or royalty interest. To protect your work, consider registering it with the U.S. Copyright Office.
Hardcover Printing FAQs
What is the difference between a dust jacket and a case wrap?
A dust jacket is a loose printed cover over the case, with flaps for a blurb and bio. A case wrap prints the artwork directly on the board, so there is no jacket.
How many pages can a hardcover have?
It depends on the binding. Case-bound hardcovers run from 100 to 1,000 pages, and children's hardcovers from 32 to 500 pages. Sewn binding covers 50 to 500 pages.
Do I need a different cover file for hardcover?
Yes, in almost every case. A hardcover cover needs its own dimensions, bleed and wrap allowance, based on your confirmed page count. A paperback file cannot be reused as is, though your artwork and design can carry over, which saves effort.
How much does hardcover printing cost?
Costs are quoted per project after a free consultation. They depend on page count, trim size, paper, finish, quantity and delivery, and the quote is fixed in writing.
Can my hardcover be sold in bookshops and libraries?
Distribution through IngramSpark can reach bookshops and libraries, but stocking is each store's decision, and we cannot guarantee orders.
