How to Use the Cover Size Calculator

  1. Enter your trim width and height in inches.
  2. Enter the final page count of the interior.
  3. Choose the paper stock, white or cream.
  4. Read the spine width, the full-wrap width and height, and the front cover size.
02

How the Cover Size Calculator Works

Spine width is the page count multiplied by the paper thickness. White paper is about 0.002252 inches per page and cream about 0.0025 inches per page, which are common figures for print on demand.

Full-wrap width is the back cover width, plus the spine, plus the front cover width, plus a bleed of 0.125 inches on the outer edges. Full-wrap height is the trim height plus 0.125 inches of bleed at the top and at the bottom.

The ebook cover is shown at 1,600 by 2,560 pixels, a widely used size with a 1.6 to 1 ratio.

Things to Know Before You Rely on the Result

  • Paper thickness differs by printer and by stock, so the printer's own template is the final word.
  • Spines under about 100 pages are too thin for readable text, so many printers advise leaving the spine blank.
  • Always keep text inside the safe zone given in the printer's template. Compare with the specs at IngramSpark.

Cover Size Calculator FAQs

How do I work out spine width?

Multiply your page count by the paper thickness per page. For white paper at 300 pages that is about 0.68 inches.

What is bleed on a book cover?

Bleed is extra artwork that runs past the trim edge so that no white edge shows after cutting. A common bleed is 0.125 inches.

What size is an ebook cover?

A common recommendation is 1,600 by 2,560 pixels, which keeps a 1.6 to 1 ratio and looks sharp on large screens.
