Developmental Editing Services That Fix the Big Problems First

Developmental editing services examine the structure of your whole book: plot, pacing, argument, characters and the order of your chapters. A developmental editor tells you what is working, what is not and what to change before anyone polishes a single sentence. It is the first level of our book editing services, and it starts from $0.030 per word. Want to see how it feels first? Get a free consultation and ask for your free sample edit.

You bring a draft and a goal, whether that is a book for readers, a query to agents or a launch under your own imprint. We bring an editor who reads every page, a written plan and a project manager who answers within one business day, so you always know what happens next.

01

What Developmental Editing Is

Developmental editing, also called structural or substantive editing, is a big-picture review of a manuscript. Your editor reads the whole draft the way a stranger would, then reports on where attention drifts, where the logic skips a step and where a promise made early in the book is never kept.

It is not a rewrite, and it is not proofreading. The editor diagnoses and suggests, and you decide. Your editor looks at the questions a reader quietly asks: Why should I care? What happens next? Is this clear? Nothing is fixed at the sentence level yet, because there is no sense in polishing a chapter that may move, merge or disappear.

Think of it as an architect walking through a house before the decorators arrive. Cracks in the foundation are far cheaper to fix now than after the paint is on.

02

Who Needs a Developmental Edit

If you have a complete draft and a nagging feeling that something is off, this is your stage. Novelists use it for sagging middles, flat stakes and unclear motivation. Memoirists use it to find the real spine of a life story. Nonfiction authors use it to cut repeated points and put ideas in an order a reader can follow.

Series writers use it to check that book two honors the promises of book one, and business authors use it to confirm that the book serves the reader and not only the author. It also helps if beta readers gave you vague feedback you cannot turn into a plan. If you have not finished a draft at all, our ghostwriting services may be the better starting point. If you have already revised heavily and want a full polish, look at manuscript editing services instead.

03

What You Receive

Every developmental edit gives you written, specific feedback you can act on, not a grade or a vague impression.

Editorial letter

A plain-language report on structure, pacing, voice and audience, with examples taken from your own chapters and a ranked list of what to tackle first. For fiction it covers plot, character arcs and point of view. For nonfiction it covers argument, order and whether each chapter earns its place.

In-text comments

Margin notes inside the manuscript, so you see each issue where it happens: a scene that repeats information, a chapter that ends too early, a claim that needs support. Strengths get marked too, because good instincts deserve to be protected, so you know what to protect while you revise.

Revision priorities

A short list that separates must-fix problems from nice-to-have improvements, so the revision stays manageable. Your editor also recommends next steps, such as a line edit once the structure is settled.

The whole package is written so a first-time author can follow it. You will not find jargon without an explanation, and every comment says what the issue is, why it matters to a reader and one way to fix it.

How a Developmental Edit Works

  1. Free consultation and sample. You tell us about the book. First-time clients can request a free edit of the first 1,000 words, with a recommendation on which edit type fits.
  2. Written quote. You receive a fixed, itemized quote with milestones, approved before any work begins. No hidden fees appear later.
  3. Full read. Your editor reads the entire manuscript before writing a single note, because a problem in chapter two is often explained in chapter nine.
  4. Report and comments. You receive the editorial letter and in-text comments. Tracked changes and suggestions are reviewed by you before anything is finalized.
  5. Your revision. You rewrite at your own pace, and many authors find one or two passes enough once the plan is clear. Revision rounds at each key stage are part of the agreed scope, and you can send questions to your project manager at any point.
05

Turnaround and Cost

Developmental editing starts from $0.030 per word. The final fixed quote depends on length, genre, research depth, number of revision rounds and your deadline. Typical turnaround is below, and your exact dates are confirmed in writing at the start.

Lower cost drivers include a clean, well-organized draft and fast feedback from you. Higher cost drivers include heavy research, a very long manuscript, extra revision rounds and compressed deadlines.

Manuscript lengthTypical developmental turnaround
Up to 5,000 words5 to 7 business days
20,000 to 40,000 words2 to 3 weeks
60,000 to 90,000 words3 to 5 weeks

Rush schedules are available for an additional fee, quoted up front. Timelines assume you return feedback within the agreed review windows. See our pricing page, and note that the Editorial Freelancers Association rate chart shows how widely editing fees vary across the industry.

06

Confidentiality and Ownership

Your manuscript stays private. Only your editor and project team see your pages. You keep 100 percent of the rights to your book, and we take no copyright, royalty or credit claim. Read any contract carefully, and the Authors Guild offers helpful guidance. To register your work, see the U.S. Copyright Office. We do not promise publication or sales.

Developmental Editing FAQs

What is the difference between developmental editing and line editing?

Developmental editing deals with structure, plot, pacing and argument across the whole book. Line editing works sentence by sentence on style, rhythm and flow. Do the developmental edit first, because big structural changes can make sentence-level polish wasted effort.

When should I hire a developmental editor?

Hire one after you have a complete draft that you have revised at least once yourself, and before you spend money on sentence-level polish. Early enough that large changes are still easy, late enough that there is a whole book to assess.

How much does developmental editing cost?

From $0.030 per word, so a 60,000-word book starts from $1,800. Your fixed written quote may be higher depending on length, genre, research depth, revision rounds and deadline, and it is approved before work begins.

How long does a developmental edit take?

A 60,000 to 90,000 word manuscript typically takes 3 to 5 weeks, and 20,000 to 40,000 words typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. Your exact date is confirmed in the written quote.

Will the editor rewrite my book?

No. You receive analysis, examples and suggestions. Every change to your text is yours to make or reject, and the book stays in your voice under your name.

Can I try a sample first?

Yes. First-time clients get a free edit of the first 1,000 words, with a recommendation on which type of editing the manuscript needs, within 3 to 5 business days of your request.
