A press release, also called a news release or media release, is a short, factual document that announces something to journalists, editors and the public. It follows a fixed structure so a busy reporter can find the who, what, when, where and why at a glance.
You need one when something has actually changed: a launch, a hire, a partnership, a funding round, an event, an award or a book. You do not need one for every bit of company news. A release works best when the story would interest someone outside your organization. If it would not, we will say so, and we may suggest a blog post or newsletter instead.
The best releases share a few traits. They lead with the news, not the company history. They are written in the third person with no sales language. They give a reporter everything needed to write a story without calling back, and they make it easy to reach someone who can answer questions. That is the standard we hold every draft to.
