Line edit report
Paste a passage of your writing and this free tool highlights long sentences, likely passive voice, repeated words and adverbs. It is a quick self-check you can run before you send a chapter to a professional, so your editor spends time on bigger things. Your text is analyzed in your browser and is never uploaded or saved.

How to Use the Line Edit Report
- Paste a sample of 200 to 2,000 words into the box.
- Press Check my writing.
- Read the summary, then look at the highlighted passages in the text.
- Revise what you agree with and ignore what you do not.
How the Line Edit Report Works
A long sentence is one over 30 words. Passive voice is flagged when a form of the verb to be is followed by a past participle, which catches most but not all cases. A repeated word is a non-trivial word used four or more times in the sample, and an adverb is any word ending in ly.
The tool also reports average sentence length and the longest sentence. These are signs to look at, not errors. Plenty of good writing uses long sentences, passive voice and adverbs on purpose.
Things to Know Before You Rely on the Result
- This is not a grammar checker and it does not follow any house style. For that, see the Chicago Manual of Style.
- It cannot judge voice, structure, pacing or accuracy, which is where a human editor earns their fee.
- A tool will miss things a reader notices at once. Treat it as a checklist, not a verdict.
Line Edit Report FAQs
Is my writing stored when I use this tool?
No. The check runs in your browser and the text is not sent to us or to anyone else.
Should I remove every passive sentence?
No. Passive voice is useful when the actor is unknown or unimportant. Change it where it makes a sentence weaker or vaguer.
Can this replace an editor?
No. It helps you tidy a draft, but a professional editor reads for meaning, structure and consistency. See our book editing services.
