Small Press Books Worth Reading

Small Press Books Worth Reading

Independent presses publish some of the most interesting books in print, and many never reach the front table of a chain bookstore. Supporting those presses and their authors is what Small Press Distribution is about. This page features 15 small press titles first highlighted by writer Wendy J Fox in Electric Literature's winter 2024 reading list. We have summarized each in our own words, so you can see what small presses are publishing and decide what to read next.

Every title is credited to its author and press. If you want to see how a book like these could come together for you, our book publishing services cover editing, design, printing and distribution.

Why small presses matter to authors

Small presses take risks that larger houses often avoid. They publish debut writers, translated work, experimental forms and regional stories, and they often work closely with each author. For writers deciding how to publish, the lesson is that there is more than one path. You can submit to an independent press, publish on your own, or work with a publishing partner who handles the production while you keep your rights.
